Robert Wetzel belongs to that small generation of gifted former students of the legendary Romeros family guitar dynasty from the period between 1972 to 1985 who has succeeded as a professional musician. Devoted to the classical guitar, he has continued with his primary vocation, maintaining a busy schedule of practicing, performing, recording, teaching and arranging music to this day.

Private guitar studies for many years were with Angel, Pepe and Celedonio Romero. While still a teenager he participated as a performer in the guitar master classes of Pepe Romero, Christopher Parkening, Oscar Ghiglia and Robert Guthrie.

He made his formal concert performance debut by sharing the stage with his mentors, the Romeros, for a full concert as the fourth member of the performing guitar quartet at the August Moon concerts of the Napa California Music Festival in 1977. His status thus confirmed alongside Celin, Pepe and Angel Romero, he performed the lute and guitar parts of their father, the great Celedonio Romero, who was vacationing in Spain that summer. The Napa concert was a special rare program by the Romeros that featured ensemble performances on lutes, vihuelas and guitars.

Undergraduate studies with Robert Guthrie at Southern Methodist University earned Robert a BA degree in musical performance and he was the first guitarist to earn a Master of Music degree from San Diego State University under the guidance of Celin Romero. During this period he also participated as a performer in master classes conducted by two Spanish master composers of the twentieth century, Joaquin Rodrigo and Federico Moreno-Torroba.

As a recording artist he has released his arrangements for two guitars on two discs for SBE Records by the award-winning Odeum Guitar Duo, an ensemble he co-founded with colleague guitarist and composer, Fred Benedetti. Their first release entitled, “Concert Hall Classics”, was chosen and awarded by Acoustic Guitar magazine as being one of the top ten best independently produced guitar CDs of 2000.

Robert also has released two solo albums for his own independent record label, Concert Hall Records, established in December, 2005. The solo CDs are entitled “Guitar Fantasy in Spain and Italy” and “Guitar Fantasy in Spain and Italy Vol. 2”.
Beginning in Spring of 2006 and thereafter, CD albums and individual tracks from the present and future sound recordings catalog of Concert Hall Records will be available worldwide for purchase online at all music websites which exist to sell downloadable music in the classical music genre. Apple iTunes, Microsoft MSN Music Store, Sony Connect, Rhapsody are just a few of the many online music stores and services that will offer single tracks or entire albums.

Robert is a frequent performer in solo, chamber music, orchestral and guitar festival concerts and currently he resides in San Diego, California where he is on the music faculties of four universities, University of California, San Diego (UCSD); San Diego State University (SDSU); University of San Diego (USD); and Grossmont College.

Robert performs on guitars handmade by Miguel Rodriguez of Cordoba and Simon Marty of Sydney, Australia. His guitar strings of preference are manufactured by Augustine (‘blue’) for the three basses and Savarez (‘yellow’ non-clear extra-hard) for the trebles.
