Helio Alves started playing piano at the age of six in his native Sao Paulo, Brazil. After training classically as a child, Helio segued into jazz and in 1985 enrolled at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Upon graduating from Berklee, Helio moved to New York and soon started working with the likes of Claudio Roditi, Paquito D'Rivera, Santi Debriano, Dave Samuels, Gato Barbieri, Hendrik Meurkens, Airto Moreira and Flora Purim, to name a few. From 1995 to 1997 Helio toured extensively with Joe Henderson's Double Rainbow Quartet celebrating the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. Helio is currently featured in the Grammy award winning CD "Joe Henderson's Big Band" on Verve Records, "Samba Manhattan Style" and "Double Standards" by Claudio Roditi on the Reservoir label, "October Colors" by Hendrik Meurkens on Concord Records and "Circlechant" by Santi Debriano on High Note Records. Helio's first solo recording was released in 1998 on Reservoir Records. It features John Patitucci and Nilson Matta on bass, Al Foster, Deduka Da Fonseca and Paulo Braga on drums.
