Many of the most skilled chazzanim (cantors) were less known to the general public than they were to their congregants or ardent cantorial music fans. Cantor Abraham Veroba never recorded himself professionally because his priority was to serve the synagogue and to teach younger prospects the true art without memorizing. Praying from the heart, not “by heart.â€
This CD was compiled by his son fours years after Cantor Veroba passed away from a rare set of lessons he allowed a student to record...something he normally never did, but the student had a long way to travel and promised to use them for reference only.
This is not a performance CD, but a training demonstration of the Rosh Hashanah prayers. It displays his mastery of the art and it conveys his true, candid view of how to pray properly for the congregation. An education you cannot get in any classroom.
Cantor Abraham Veroba was a multi-faceted talent whose occupation and biggest love was being a cantor. Born in Brooklyn and attaining his first cantorial position at 12 years old, he learned his craft under the wing of his mentor, Cantor Yossele Rosenblatt. His inate ability and love for his craft made him an original, uniquely sweet and inspirational singer, without flowering his music with operatic effect.
Those who heard him and knew him will tell you how rare and gifted he was. An expert chazzan, an American WWII military hero, he was deeply devoted to his art, his congregants, his family, Israel and America.
