As a child, Brad Smolkin watched his maternal grandfather, a Russian Jew who immigrated to the U. S. in 1917, don a prayer shawl and say prayers in Hebrew three times a day. Decades later, he began to wonder what those prayers were all about, and why his grandfather recited them so faithfully, and he started to recite them daily as well. He set some of the individual blessings to new music.
With the help of his friend, inspiration and producer, Steve McConnell, he released "Shirei T'fillah - Songs of Prayer" in 2004, which contains eight songs based on daily prayer texts, and two songs based on prayers from the Shabat (Sabbath) service.
Brad hopes these songs will enrich the prayer lives of many others, and will inspire further musical exploration of the Jewish legacy.
