Irish music in your rock and roll? Rock in your Irish music? Washington, D.C.'s 40 Thieves fuse the best of both on their debut CD, a 15-song blend of traditional and new Irish music, crafty originals, and rocking live cuts.
In less than three years, 40 Thieves have established themselves as one of the best loved Irish bands in the Metro DC area. From the groovy dank of Flanagan's Irish Pub to the wide-open stages of Northern Virginia's annual Shamrock Festival this rocking ensemble has wowed the crowds by wedding old fashioned and newfangled Irish music with straight ahead rock and roll. Vocalist Melanie Caudron's rich, mellow croon meshes beautifully with guitarist Dave Dresser's gritty rock yawp. Fiddler Randy Latimer's classically honed, Cape Breton-influenced chops filigree the bar-band stomp provided by drummer Allen Muller and bassist Charlie McNamara. Multi-faceted? No doubt. And the debut CD is some gem.
Recorded over the winter of 2003-2004, The Devil Made Me Do It displays the hallmark lilt, punch, humor and soul to which DC's pub crawlers have pledged allegiance. Over a round dozen studio cuts, including two sly tunes by guitarist Dresser, plus three sterling live tracks, the Thieves jig, reel, and rock with a vengeance. Check out the fire 40 Thieves lights under standards like Marie's Wedding, or dig the raucous tumult of The Night Pat Murphy Died (not to mention the "Centerfold" riff that gooses Galway City!). The songs all tell great stories--herein you'll find cheating, hook-ups, spousal neglect, brawling, weddings, technological unemployment, a dog, fever-dreams, childhood trauma, a centerfold and a stiff.
