BESSIE MAES DREAM
bio
"With in moments, I realized I was in the presence of something truly special... exploring territory the likes of which I'd never heard. Mesmerizing" - Jambase.com
Based in Charlotte, NC, Bessie Mae's Dream was founded in 1996 by Jerry Shaver, Marcus Cheek and Danny Thomas, who drummed in the 13th Floor Elevators, Rocky Ericson's 60's psychedelic outfit. After several years of playing venues throughout the South, Bessie Mae's Dream released TIME TO BURN, in 1998. Press raves included the Charlotte Observer which stated, "These are hippie grooves done right."
Although TIME TO BURN impressed the late Dick Latvala (Dick's Picks) and David Gans (Deadhead Hour) several members, including Danny Thomas, left the band. After a brief hiatus, the group reformed late in '98.
Bessie Mae's Dream completed their self-titled second CD in the fall of 1999. The album included Special Guest Artist Tom Constanten (Grateful Dead), who performed on two of the CD's 11 songs.
On December 13th of 2000, Bessie Mae's Dream broadcast live from Uncle Dave's 'Dead Air' show on WNCW in Spindale, NC, reaching 100,000 listeners. With broadcast towers throughout NC, SC, & TN, WNCW has been spinning BMD for the past 3 years, and had BLIND MAN SUNSET, the current album, in regular rotation. The band's run of good press continued: in Dec of 2000, Bessie Mae's Dream received a favorable review in Relix, and a e-mail fan rave from Ken Babbs and Ken Kesey!!!
ALSO... the band performed their NYC premier on March 27th, 2001 at the WETLANDS PRESERVE with major jamming, much dancing and interestellar overdrive.
SMILEFEST 2001, Bessie Mae's first large festival outing, saw the band headline opening night w Special Guest Tom Constanten. The band performed for over 2 hours, and recieved a enthusiastic response and a genuine encore.
On Feb 20, 2002 BMD gave a seocnd live broadcast from the Spindale studios of WNCW, playing for over an hour and a half.
During the summer of 2002, BMD gave a second continued to expand their mid-Atlantic fan base. On Feb 15, 2003, the band celebrated the release of BLIND MAN SUNSET, their third outing, w an album release party at the Visulite Theater in Charlotte w over 350 people in attendance.
