Nashville Rage "I SHOT THE KING" CD REVIEW

Bang Bang Bang: I Shot the King

Self-released

New Nashville band Bang Bang Bang won't and shouldn't run from comparisons to rockers Kings Of Leon.

There's no mistaking the similarities between Bang Bang Bang singer Jaren Johnston's garbled drawl and KOL frontman Caleb Followill's Southern slack-jawed style. Bang Bang Bang also tread through the swamps of Southern rock, but they don't come out the other side with as indie rock-influenced a sound as KOL. When a song hits the point where KOL would likely alter their aim, Bang Bang Bang just shoot straight. When it's time to deliver the clincher chorus, KOL might just decide to flip you off. Bang Bang Bang instead give in and give you the devil horn rock salute.

Johnston, who also dabbles in commercial country songwriting, knows his way around a hit melody, but he also knows one too many clichés.

I Shot the King isn't likely to endear Bang Bang Bang to the more esoteric rock critics, but this CD has more tunes you can see translating to American rock radio, a place the Kings have yet to conquer.
