The blind sea captain with his "Romantic Rap"
A blind singer/songwriter, as well as an independent record producer and book author, Capt. Joe Buser, known now as the blind sea captain and songwriter, launched his music career 40 years ago when at the age of 24 opened the first non-alcoholic teenage night club on Long Island, New York; called the SWINGING SOIREE. Capt. Joe is no stranger to the music industry. His credits date back to the 60’s when he established his own independent record label, ‘FROG RECORDS’ and his own publishing company, ‘MARILYN MUSIC BMI’. At that time he wrote songs, recorded and produced local Long Island artists. Although no fame came from it at that time, those recording are currently nationally release by Collectible Records. ‘THE FROG RECORD STORY, "Long Island Artists, Sounds of the 60’s, Vol. I and Vol. II.
In 1979, Capt. Joe was diagnosed with a blinding eye disease, RETINITIS PIGMENTOSA, which put him in a deep depression that took several years to over come. However, through courage and adventure, he turned his life around. In 1989, the U.S. Coast Guard named Capt. Joe an honorary sea captain, when he successfully piloted his powerboat 212 miles from Bay Shore, N.Y. to Montauk Point, N.Y. and back. As a result of his changed life style, the words came easy and he started writing songs again. Each song is based on a new life experience and a heart felt emotion that comes through in each and every lyric.
The media attention that he readily gained from his blind boat trip was outrageous. Among the 400 people present as he departed on his journey, were the New York Times and Newsday, also NBC, CBS & FOX 5 TV NEWS. The media responds when Capt, Joe does something. Recently, he auditioned before a live audience in New York City for PAX TV. He also has performed at various clubs. He preformed for the Long Island Idol contest, although he did not win, he received notable mention. Capt. Joe has met in person with Smokey Robinson, for whom he had written a song and presented it to him.
You may have heard of Capt. Joe after WTC – 911 episode, when he wrote and released ‘SPINNING TOO FAST’, (track 12 – Come On Rain) a song about terrorist attack. Today, as face war, combined with the worse threat of terrorism ever, perhaps ‘SPINNING TOO FAST’ holds a more meaningful message today than when release in 2001. It was independently released and was getting airplay on 25 radio stations on both the east and west coasts. However, we were unable to pull together quick enough a national distribution before it lost its airplay.
Capt. Joe has written three books, an autobiography, which he presented to the famous, late Steve Allen for some tips. Mr. Allen made some comments and encouraged him to finish the book. He has also written a cookbook and a book of poetry.
Capt. Joe has been referred to by writers in New York newspapers as a mad musical scientist. Long Island, radio DJ, Dennis Falcon said, " Capt. Joe writes from; the heart about real people, experiences and memories. His songs are a musical photo album.
To date, Capt. Joe has written 64 songs and is currently producing 2 new projects of his original material with other artist. Capt. Joe is represented by well known entertainment attorney, Ellis Pailet of New Orleans, who worked with the late Ray Charles and currently works with several L.A. rappers.
Capt. Joe truly believes that he is destined to replace the late Tiny Tim on the novelty music scene. His future goals; After 40 years of chasing his musical dream, he wants to achieve national fame by being a one hit wonder and have one million seller to his credit.
You will enjoy his two current cds, both which are recorded in the vocal style, which Capt. Joe created and calls ‘ROMANTIC RAP’. His first solo cd, ‘THE FLIPSIDE, leans mostly to R&B sounds of the 60’s with 2 tracks introducing his creation called country doo-wop; whereas, his newest cd ‘COME ON RAIN’ contains 18 outrageous tracks of today’s hip/hop and R&B sounds, bringing in a splash of raggae on 2 of the 18 tracks. Capt. Joe has made two national TV appearances; December 17th 2004, live guest om Paula Zahn's CNN show and more recently, on March 8th, 2005 on ABC,s Jimmy Kimmel LIve Show, where Capt. Joe performed the song, "white Stevie Wonder", from his "Come On Rain" cd.
