Dark Matter's origins go back to 1996 when singer/songwriter/vocalist John H. began writing and performing solo under this name.
In 1998, John H. hooked up with the Topeka, KS contingent of Kevin Horton (drums), Brad Durston (guitar), and John Cummings (Guitar).
Upon their very first mutual audition, this troupe knew great things were in store and Hindes quickly got on the phone to get his long-time bandmate David (bass) to haul his ass down to Kansas to round-out this bizarre collection of like minds.
Dark Matter is metal but it is not metal. It's everything and then at the same time it's nothing. It runs the gamut from hardcore to heavy metal to punk to death metal to nu metal to thrash to emo rock to hard rock to classic rock to blues to classical. Elements of these genres can be heard at different times with varying degrees of certainty.
The vocals often deal with mortality, cosmology, and societal bullshit. Not without including himself as part of the problems of the world, John H. blends science, sick humor, fright, and a visceral punch to the mix, fitting his vocals in deftly betwixt the maddening, often frenetic, off-kilter music surrounding him.
They're known for putting on kick-ass performances, too.
Dark Matter has earned slots with Lacuna Coil, Trust Company, Dog Fashion Disco, Flyleaf, Pissing Razors, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, and Pigmy Love Circus (among many others).
