RIVETING, the new cd from Cincinnati guitarist, J. Russ Willoughby, is nothing short of amazing. And while the guitar playing is incredible, Willoughby's songwriting skills is what really impresses. His firm belief that "Melody is King" is evident within all 15 tracks. From the sing-songy "Back Again" to the industrial-sounding title track, to the lovely, Celtic feel of "Left At The Strand", every tune on RIVETING is bound to move you.
And while he is influenced by such guitar greats as Joe Satriani, Michael Schenker, and Gary Moore, Willoughby's style has become his own. When he plays fast, he plays with feeling; but without what he calls, "That annoying buzz-saw sound". And when it comes time to slow it down, as during the middle of "Subway Song", he's very tasteful.
The perfect follow up to his 2001 release, BEYOND THE VELVET ROPE (also available on CDBaby), RIVETING is a must for any fan of melodic guitar instrumentals.
