Jeff Beck... Alex Lifeson... Michael Schenker... three of many names in the world of guitar whose creative genius have been a motivating force behind the music of guitarist PJ Bussey. It's the same force that caused one person to approach PJ, during a break between sets, to show him the hair standing on his arms. The same force that caused another young lady to say, with tears streaming down her face, "I've never heard one guitar sound like six before".
Whether it's "throwing down" full band arrangements of selections from his two CDs Attic Symphony and The Faultline Dance or pulling off daring acoustic fingerstyle arrangements of arena rock covers, Bussey is quick to respond to such flattering feedback by saying " Man, I'm just shamelessly having fun".
PJ, at 11 years of age decided that his life's work would be with a guitar in his hands and he hasn't looked back since. After years of playing in some moderately successful bands, the past few years have found him finely crafting his penchant of making a guitar "sing". He firmly believes if he's going to reach beyond the ears of the musician crowd to a broader fanbase, as an instrumentalist, he has to make a strong emotional musical connection with his audience. By placing his arranging and orchestrating skills at the forefront, he draws just what's needed from his technical ability to serve the song. He then serves it up with a heaping dose of rock n' roll attitude. "That attitude is what's keeping the songs from becoming glorified elevator music", he states. "I heard a muzak version of The Wind Cries Mary (Jimi Hendrix) one day in the supermarket and wanted to throw tomatoes at the speakers in the ceiling. On the other hand, I saw Jeff Beck bring a packed Wolf Trap audience to their feet with an inventive instrumental version of A Day In A Life (The Beatles) and thought now THAT is how to take a guitar and move an audience".
PJ Bussey is also a guitar educator and has opened his own guitar instructional facilty called Frets On Fire Guitar Master Classes. He is currently accepting students in the Charlotte / Concord and surrounding areas.
