Adam's Revenge

The History of...

Adam's Revenge was formed in the winter of 1997 by CAB, a seasoned rock drummer who still had his days in the 80's Los Angeles club scene echoing in his mind. Hopeful to recapture some of that same magic, CAB performed with several local Detroit-area bands all of which failed to live up to the expectations set by his L.A. days.

CAB: "Metal has been my main domain of music for over three decades. Fads will come and go, but Ozzy and Metallica can consistently sell out arenas around the world-why? Because they write melodic metal."

In March of 1997, CAB discovered guitarist Keith Ferrilla and bassist Eric Vancil and began writing and rehearsing in earnest for the chance to play live gigs.

CAB: "I wanted to be up front in the ad I used to get a band. After parting ways with countless bands, I realized I needed to find people who share my musical ideas which are reflected in the ad. I was very direct about the musical direction, the live show and the image that I wanted by then even if it was contrary to the majority. I didn't care what other musicians thought, I never have and never will. I knew I wasn't going to be happy until I was ripping out gut-wrenching, yet melodic, hard rock tunes of my own with a mind-blowing show."

Eric: "I remember when CAB and I met in late '96 that I had met him previously. The first time was in early '91 when future Adam's Revenge guitarist Jay Gutholm and I were looking for a drummer, and then again in early '96 when CAB was looking for a bassist for a band he was in. I knew that I finally found someone who approached music with the same scrutiny and enthusiasm that I did."

Soon, it became apparent that having a two-song cassette sampler to give to club owners and to pass out to the public-at-large would be the best way to "spread the disease."

Recording of this cassette began in May of 1997, during which a second guitarist was added to the lineup.

Eric: "Of course now we needed a singer. This began an unprecedented search as I've never been as picky with other bands as I came to be with this one. I wasn't going to be satisfied with anything less than what I and the rest of the band felt to be the best."

CAB: "At least 80 singers came over to try out and I could see the rest of the band was getting impatient. I eventually called a friend of mine from my L.A. days, Bob Reynolds. This guy was and still is the best metal vocalist I've ever heard. I asked him if he would sing on our two-song cassette and he agreed, for a nominal fee."

Eric: "Adding Bob Reynolds' voice to the cassette, to me, made the project complete. The only problem is it did NOT help in our search for a frontman. CAB, the two guitarists, and I were now even MORE selective about who we wanted.

Both guitarists quit soon after the recording of this cassette, simply entitled, "The Appetizer," to pursue other interests. The search for a guitarist as well as a vocalist would not be easy. Numerous guitarists came and went, but Eric recommended Jason Gutholm, a guitarist with whom he had worked from the years of 1989-1995. After a couple of false starts Jason finally found his niche in the band and writing soon began on what would become their self-titled debut album. While this was happening, the songs on The Appetizer appeared on various compilation CDs.

Jason: "I had worked with Eric before so I knew we'd be able to write some cool songs in this context. Due to previous run-ins, I knew CAB was a great drummer, so I figured if we could all gel personally, we had the potential to be a great band."

CAB: "Eric and I were fed up with the lack of participation on the part of the previous members and Jason seemed easier to write with. They are all great guitarists, but Jason just seemed all around better and more serious for the part."

Eric: "I hated to see some of them go, as I'm the one responsible for bringing them in the band, but with their decreasing participation I could see the writing on the wall, so I agreed that we should part ways. Jason was my first musical partner and it's because of our long history that we work so well together. In addition, we are very close friends which adds to the chemistry. I was VERY excited at the prospect of working with my original musical partner again, and felt we both had much to bring to the band."

Still, the band needed a vocalist and this proved to be no easy feat, for now they had to find someone to live up to the expectations set by Bob Reynolds. Finding a vocalist who had Bob's vocal presence, sheer power and control proved to be a difficult task. After numerous hopefuls, a singer named Gerry Maciok showed promise. Already tiring of listening to vocalist after vocalist failing to live up to the high expectations, CAB turned the job of talking to Gerry, known as G. to Eric and Jason. This turned out extremely well for the band, as they clicked with G and he clicked with the band. G's philosophy on well-played, well-written music, presented with a killer live show combined with a dynamic stage image matched that of Adam's Revenge all too well-This resulted in G becoming the new vocalist of Adam's Revenge.

CAB: "I don't think we ever said to G that he was in, we just kept writing and I guess it was understood between all of us that he was our man."
"We recorded as we wrote because we rehearsed in my recording studio at my house, so it didn't take long to get enough material for the CD."

Jason: "I thought that G had a unique and powerful voice. I think he fits the material that we're doing now, his high-end voice is more suitable for it."

Eric: "Even though G is very different stylistically from Bob, I think that he is able to put a new spin on Adam's Revenge without losing the sound that has been developing over time, only now fully realized with the release of our debut album. I think G will work out well."

G: "I've tried out for numerous bands over the years, and these guys just had everything together. I wanted to find people who were just as dedicated to making the best music possible as I am, and I think with these guys I found it."

The self-titled debut album (CD/cassette) was recorded and released within months of G's addition to the band. Adam's Revenge has never been a band to stay in one musical spot, and although they cover a plethora of musical ground, it always stays true to the core sound that defines Adam's Revenge
