Coilback has been described as a combination of many bands but at the same time carving their own sound. This album has been said to be a combination of old, "Kill Em All" style Metallica and Rob (White) Zombie. All the songs on the album are diverse but have an "easily accessible" sound on them. "Coilback's "Love Is Dead" is just what the doctor ordered. A heavy album with solid tunes, a great sound and no bullshit. What I really dig about this release is the fact that the music is simple to describe...it's metal and it's heavy...and, yes, that style of music has been done before, more times than I can count actually. But, when you listen to this release, it sounds fresh, like something you've never heard before. It takes a lot of talent to pull off some shit like that and, obviously, Coilback must be loaded with it because this album attaches itself to you from the moment you hear it.
I really dig the fact that there's a lot of variety on this album...and a lot of music. Thirteen songs with a running time that's a few seconds short of a full hour. When an album's this long, there usually tends to be some weak material, filler, whatever you wanna call it. That's not the case here. I dug this one from start to finish and then some. I was really fond of "Nothing's Done," which was a quick tune with a punk vibe. "Hate Me" was quite good in the lyrical department. "Your Misery" was a pretty kickin' tune and, hell, if I have to keep thinking about it, I'm sure I can find something decent to say about each and every track because they're all good. It's pretty much the perfect album for the everyday headbanger. How's that for a quick one liner? Any praise this band is given is well deserved. "This is what I'm talking about! Metal that will kick your ass and keep kicking it until you lay lifeless! Picking up from their self titled 5 song EP, "Love Is Dead" contains all of those 5 tracks with the exception of "Won't Follow", but that's okay because there's more than enough tracks to make up for it- 12 regular tracks and one bonus track ("Don't Stay") on this album, with each being better than the last.
"Unbroken" is a pretty hard hitting track that opens up "Love Is Dead". With Kill 'em All era James Hetfield vocals, Lew Morris' voice is almost as heavy as his guitar riffs. In the song "Love Is Dead" I keep waiting for Lew to yell "C'mon! Jump in the Fire!" The track itself is one the heaviest and the best. The guys play very together and it shows in this track. "Take it From Me" sounds to me like a song written to someone who has betrayed a one time friend and the now ex friend is standing up for themselves and is telling the betrayer "look at me now mother fucker!" My absolute favorite track is "Green House". Now it's a bit different then the rest of the tracks. It's not one of those "in your face" tracks, but it's more like a song that opens itself up to you. The music and vocals are a perfect combination.
The vocal breakdowns and music in "Let Me Go" are cool. I like how the band pulled it off. "Your Misery" is a short and sweet tune that has some Megadeth undertones to it, so of course it's a bad ass track. "Twisted Vision" kind of mixes south-western/Texas rock with the band's unique metal sound. The bonus track "Don't Stay" is one of the album's better tracks. If you come into the middle of the song and have no idea who is playing, you could easily mistake the song from something off the second Danzig album. It's an amazing song. I'm very happy they decided to include it to complete the first full length album from Coilback. " - Black Angel Promotions
"Coilback Dallas, Texas. Coilback proves that metal is NOT dead with their '04 release 'Love is Dead'. Blending samples ala White Zombie, buzzsaw guitars, a driving rhythm section, and awesome packaging, this CD just flat out rocks! Vocalist/guitarist Lew Morris sounds like a young Rob Zombie/James Hetfield, especially on tracks Unbroken and Time for Pain. You can really feel the passion through his singing. The groove on Going Away will surely get your head to bobbin' up and down, thanks to Vlad Cadillac(bass) and Steven Green(drums). They really lay down a solid groove across the entire CD! Nothing's Done is a 1 minute 58 second punk thrash fest, a real neck snapper! The track that surprised me the most was the bonus track Don't Stay. Lew comes across sounding like Jim Morrison.
