From tango to Tchaikovsky, Beethoven to Brubeck, Mozart to Mancini, Quartet San Francisco uses the rich sound of strings to broaden musical horizons. Quartet San Francisco includes violinists Jeremy Cohen and Kayo Miki, violist Emily Onderdonk, and cellist Joel Cohen. The group is dedicated to performing every composition true to the style in which it was conceived. Their repertoire serves up Big Band, Latin and jazz with infectious enthusiasm and incredible technique.
In 2004 Quartet San Francisco was among thirty competitors participating in the New York City International Tango Competition, sponsored by the Argentine Consulate. The quartet won both the Special Prize and the Grand Prize, which awarded them five performances in Buenos Aires and New York in the 2004-2005 season.
This all-Latin CD with special guest John Santos (percussion) includes 11 tangos arranged by Jeremy Cohen, an original chorro written for the quartet by Evan Price of the Turtle Island String Quartet and a mambo by Cohen. David Balakrishnan's (Turtle Island) arrangement of the Leonard Bernstein hit "Cool" from "West Side Story" was a lot of fun for the quartet to record as was "Cachita" by the popular Puerto Rican songwriter of the 1940's, Rafael Hernandez.
