BLAZE
Old school sensibilities...New school sounds...
Jazz:::Funk:::Hip-Hop:::Electronica - All mixed to form a blazing sound.
This is for listeners and rump shakers alike!
Brannen Temple (Sheena Easton, Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson, Robben Ford, Hot Buttered Rhythm) is a dynamic drummer, organizer and the group's musical conceptualist. With no piano or other chordal instruments at hand for harmonics, the horns are free to explore many directions. And with a DJ / turntablist in the band, their sound is expressively unique.
Funky syncopation, stylistic shifts and sometimes a comedic playfulness shape the band's sonic landscape. Pulling from a large bag of influences from Jazz innovators like trumpet legend Miles Davis to Hip Hop beats and modern Electronica, melodies and rhythms meld together intelligently and soulfully.
Joining Temple (who also employs the use of a sampler) are these inspired youthful musicians and together, they create this unconventional piano-less quintet's unique and captivating acoustic / electric hybrid sound.
Ephraim Owens (Clark Terry, Marchel Ivery, James Clay, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe) on trumpet w/ effects
Michael Malone (Jimmy Smith, Othello Mullineux) on tenor / soprano saxophones and EWI
Marc Miller (Hollywood Hills Orchestra, Cecil Welch) on acoustic bass w/ effects
NickNack (from Crowd Control Records) on turntables
Also included on "Aural Karate" are special guest musicians:
Steve Snyder and Dave Palmer on piano, keys and gadgetry
Marty Muse on pedal steel
Jason McKenzie on tablas
BLAZE has turned the heads of the public at large. In their hometown of Austin, TX they have won Austin Chronicle Readers Poll 'Jazz Band of the Year' in 2001 through 2003. In 2000 they performed the Hillebrand Jazz Festival in Niagara-On-The-Lake, ONT. In the summer of 2002 they toured the Midwest performing in various cities like Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and they have done collaborative performances w/ Jazz vocalist Mandy Gaines in Taipei, Taiwan.
During live shows, some (Jazz) standards and a significant number of tightly executed original songs are presented. Humbly, BLAZE pays musical homage to the Jazz Masters and other masterful musicians of various musical genres that inspired them to play. Youth alive, not living in the past they honor the present and future helping to keep alive the brightly burning flame of Jazz.
