...."Like flying" is a collection of lively and eclectic songwriting.... (Amsterdam Weekly)
For the last years the German (Amsterdam based) Andy Arnold Trio continuously developed a very personal and fresh sound somewhere between Jazz, Rock, Drum'n'Bass and Country.
The strong and entirely original compositions are often departure or arrival points for extensive improvisations that take unexpected turns due to the band's very strong interplay. Collective Improvisation is a term that might come close to what's happening in the solos but it is usually associated with the free-jazz idiom, whereas this band is definitely into strong grooves (how about free-but-funky?). The simple trio setting allows the musicians to make creative use of effects, loops and prepared drums without overloading the music.
Artists such as Wayne Krantz and The Bad Plus, that in recent years developed a new way of playing jazz influenced music in a more raw and non-intellectual way, influenced this young trio as well as John Coltrane, Brad Mehldau, 70s Miles Davis, David Binney and the Beatles in their late sixties psychedelic phase.
