"Miles Latino"
"...much more than Latin Jazz!"

AJ Records presents "Miles Latino", the first Latin tribute to the music of Miles Davis. The well-known trumpet player Humberto Ramirez is the leader of this production, which also counts with the participation of recognized musicians like the saxophonist Michael Brecker, the pianist Edward Simon, the bassist John Benitez, the drummer Horacio "El Negro" Hernández and the conga player Richie Flores.

Miles Davis has been an outstanding trumpet player, and many of his themes have turned into standards. His exceptional performances have been enriched by the improvisation and have been a great influence to the genre and other artists. As a result Humberto Ramirez decided to make a tribute to Davis and has chosen some of his productions, in combination with the reflection and perspective of this music with a wide variety of latin rhythms, exploring new territories.

Ramirez chose a few of the many compositions that Miles recorded over the years and he reharmonized and altered the rhythms and tempos in which these themes were originally recorded. The selection of this album includes "Four", "My Funny Valentine", "Round Midnight", "Tutu", "Straight No Chaser", "Someday my Prince will come" and "So What". These standards are now new and rich expressions of Latin Jazz, thanks to the performance of the musicians that are part of this production. Simon, Benitez, "El Negro" Hernández and Flores are well-kwon exponents of the genre, and have played with artists such as Tito Puente, Dave Valentin, Mongo Santamaria, Eddie Palmieri and Hilton Ruiz among others.

The saxophonist Michael Brecker is the only musician of this album that is not latin, but has joined his talent to this project providing his personal touch to "So What", "Straight No Chaser" and "Four". He is not only an admirer of Davis's music, but he is also one of the major artist of the American Jazz genre, and has proven it by winning nine Grammy Awards.

"Miles Latino" includes "Transcendental", an original composition of Humberto Ramirez. This theme is a tribute to Miles in which his music is combined with latin rhythms.

"Miles Latino" is not only Latin Jazz, is the fulfillment of a project that Humberto began to consider on September 28th, 1991, while visiting a record store in New York City, when he uncovered Miles Dewey Davis III had passed away.
