POTATO MOON is a contemporary alternative group from Grand Rapids, Michigan and is made up of siblings Ben, Jane and Laura Stancil along with father Phil Stancil. "Carnival" is their third album and follow-up to "Midnight Water". It
highlights Potato Moon's unique vocal harmonies and diverse
songwriting. The group started as a folk-bluegrass group but has, over time, spread it's musical wings defining a
new sound which is hard to categorize but easy to listen to.
Carnival is loosely based on a traveling show. It's main character is a young man living in a small town who is eventually kidnapped and made to be a tightrope walker. He escapes and, while on the run, hears the voice of God and the angels in the song Hold On. The songs on this album are as diverse as the acts in a traveling circus. Don't Open Up Your Eyes, and Will I Fall evoke similar musical colors as vocal songbirds Norah Jones or Eva Cassidy while Hangtown and Big Rain Fire sound like the country blues musings of Mark Knopfler. The lead vocal on Hold On is reminiscent of the late Tempations singer David Ruffin while Hey Yeah, Carnival and Sing Sweet Baby are molded on a moderate tempo swing. Carnival as a whole is a unique blend of catchy hooks, silvery vocals, and lush instrumentation. Enjoy.
