Emilio Arrieta (1823-1894) first went to Italy as a boy with one of his sisters. So captivated by both the Coutry and its music that the ventures back when hi was barely sixteen, this time alone and with empty pockets. Thanks, however to the protection of an Italian aristocrat, he was able to study music at the Milan Conservatory and to meet the great composers and singers of the day. A master by the time he was 24, Arrieta decided to return to Spain. Isabel II, who was at that time putting the final touches on her chamber music theatre, requestes that he compose an opera for its grand opening. Thus it was that "Ildegonda" and eventually "La conquista de Granada" came into being. He collaborated on both works with the Italian Librettist Temistocles Solera, who had previosuly worked with Verdi.

Although Arrieta´s two operas were well received in Italy, Madrid´s Teatro Real did not provide him with the same facilities. The sataging of "Ildegonda" in Madrid did not measure up to the composer´s hopes. Arrieta became aware that, if his works were to triumph in Spain, they would have to be performed by Spanish artists and in the Spanish language. This led him to work on an original libretto by Francisco Camprodón; a story based on seaside life, set on the Catalan Costa Brava with unsophisticated fishermen and sailors, with straightforward plot and easy versification. This became "Marina", originally conceived as a Zarzuela in two acts. it was first performed in public on 21 September, 1855 in the Teatro Circo of Madrid whit little success. Later that putting the spoken parts to music and adding another act, Arrieta transformed "Marina" form zarzuela into opera. "Marina" the opera was first performed in public in the teatro Real on 16 March 1871. It was an overwhelming success and was subsequently performed in the most prestigiouslyric theatres of Europe and America.
