four pieces for piano

four pieces for piano is a disc of pieces written by carl testa. the first three are for solo piano performed by carl testa, the fourth is a piano duo performed by carl testa and smith louis.

-winter trees
this is a piece that was notated as it was performed in private. the piece is divided into measures where a measure contains a series of notes. the performer may play that measure (series of notes) in any order, using any rhythms s/he wants. the performer can move on to the next measure when they feel to.

-second piece for piano-improvisation in f# major
both these pieces are modal improvisations. the first working with a melodic theme, the second(f# major) working with different diatonic harmony.

-piece for piano(s)
this piece can be played by one or more pianos and can last for any duration. the performance here is performed on two pianos and lasts for about 20 minutes. the piece consists of the players holding their hands in a cupped position and at their own tempo drawing their hands up the black keys and down the white keys and back. the goal though is not to hit all the keys, but to reach the median between sounding and not sounding notes. inevitibly though (because of the position of the players hands), notes will sound; but not because of the decision of the players, but from the amount of pressure between the fingers and the keys. what results are small bursts of sounds coming from both pianos slowly and gently.
