Why can't boys be trusted? Do cows really make holes in the ozone? Were the '70s cool or just dumb? And are we the last generation of rock and roll? Journalist/songwriter Mike Starling ponders dilemmas big and small on a bluesy, folky, 15-song collection that Amazon.com rated five stars.

FIVE-AND-A-HALF FUN FACTS:
1. A Plymouth Horizon horn is one of the "instruments" used on "Road Construction."

2. "Heileman's" was first written in 1984 as a tribute (of sorts) to a La Crosse, Wis. brewery by Mike and his first band, Your Missing Socks. The song has now outlasted both that band and the brewery, which closed in 1999.

3. Number of guitar solos on this album: 0.

3.5. Number of kazoo solos: 1 ("Last Generation of Rock & Roll").

4. The CD was mastered by Grammy Award-winning engineer Brett Huus.

5. The song "Faux Life" was selected for the soundtrack of the indie feature film "Coffee Refills Are Free"...the songs "Heileman's" and "Da Vinci Drives A Cherokee" were chosen for the compilation album "La Muse: La Crosse Musicians For Safe Energy."

ABOUT THE BAND:
Mike Starling started the Bean Hoy band in the early '90s as an outlet for his wryly literate songs about American pop culture and post-modern life. "Boys Can't Be Trusted" includes remastered tracks from two recording sessions, including songs from the debut Bean Hoy cassette (named Best Local Recording of the Year in the 1994 La Crosse Area Music Awards).

Those sessions feature Casey Virock on acoustic guitar and Jim Vogt (now gigging with a jazz band in Fairbanks, Alaska) on drums. The second features Seattle recording artist Hans Mayer (hansmayer.com) on guitar and bass and New York session player David Purcell on drums. Starling sang and played acoustic guitar, bass and harmonica on both sessions. Additional guest musicians include Mark Lakmann (trombone, horn arrangements), Jason Knox (keyboards, vocals), Gretchen Starling (tuba), Pete Vogt (clarinet, drums, vocals), Jeff Halko (lap steel, vocals) and Lonnie Oines (bass).

Mike is joined in the current Milwaukee-based Bean Hoy band lineup by bassist Jared Drake, drummer Bob Mueller and lead guitarist Tom Plutshack. More info and free MP3s of the band's live songs are available online at beanhoy.net.
